Massenez

the inevitable…

Manou Massenez now represents the 4th generation of distillers of her family. A heritage she is proud of from her earliest age and that she promotes in France and abroad where the distillerie Massenez is known for more than 100 years.

Can you present us Massenez in a few words?

Of course, with pleasure! The Massenez Distillery has been founded in 1870 in Alsace, especially thanks to the status of itinerant distiller that was widespread at that time. But it is my father Gaby Massenez who knew how to give our distillery an international breadth thanks to almost industrial production tools for his fruit eaux-de-vie. Quickly and with the growing success of his brandies, he decided to extend his savoir-faire to creams and fruit liqueurs... Then he went to conquer the world! The neighbouring countries first, then the United States, Canada... Australia and even Japan! Over time, Massenez really imposed itself on the greatest tables in the world and in the most beautiful bars. Still today, Massenez is recognized for its unequalled quality. Furthermore we are proud this year to have won gold medals again for our pear and raspberry brandies at international contests.

If you had to define your brandies?

They are soft, elegant... All that symbolizes the Massenez Eaux-de-Vie is related to their finesse! You have the sensation t to crunch in a perfectly ripe fruit but at the same time to feel its freshness and crispness...

How does Massenez stand out among the other houses?

I would say that each house has its specificity, savoir-faire and a secret well kept by a cellar master who takes care to always reach an optimum quality... Don't think we are going to tell you everything!

For which type of consumer are the Massenez eaux-de-vie made?

That is a wide issue as everyone can afford to enjoy an eau-de-vie! It is not a question of being a connoisseur but just to be able to appreciate beautiful, genuine, tasty things... There is so much work to craft an eau-de-vie, and each bottle of Massenez has a history. Some would prefer to enjoy a plain brandy after a meal, as the tradition of schnapps imposes, whereas the youngest consumers will choose to discover them through a cocktail. It is what stroke us when we launched the universe Cocktails Miss Massenez with my chairman Bernard Baud and Elodie Naslin (marketing manager): the young generations or women love these cocktails and discover the Massenez Eaux-de-Vie, Creams and Fruit Liqueurs differently. They would never dare tasting a plain eau-de-vie, but cocktails give them the opportunity of this experience … and they are fond of it!

Miss Massenez, a concept that seduces! Tell us.

This concept is born from the will to give Massenez a strong identity and to touch a younger generation … without changing the products! A real challenge. With my Chairman, we have browsed through the history of the company and set our conclusions in front of an economic reality.

The observation was simple on both sides: women play a dominant role! At the same time in the success of the Massenez distillery as my father has been the first one to distill wild raspberry, the feminine fruit par excellence. And of course I contributed to this feminine identity ...

And from an economic point of view, women are the main consumers of cocktails! We thus definitely held a strong hand and created our muse, Miss Massenez: an elegant, mysterious woman whose face remains hidden ...

She conceals an entire universe of cocktails made by our professional barman Pierre Boueri. Pierre created a list of cocktails at the image of our house: simple but elegant made with a Massenez Eau-de-Vie, Cream or Liqueur and a fruit juice.

These cocktails meet great success and restored a real dynamism in our house, without however compromising the traditional consumption of our brandies.

From woman to woman, can you share a tasting advice?

As a woman I always favoured the nose when tasting in order to discover very clear aromas but also very complex and so different. For the tasting of a spirit, contrary to wine, you must not spit it out. I have always recommended to only dip the point of the tongue in the glass which is enough to get the delicate and elegant fragile aromas of the Massenez eaux-de-vie.

Projects in 2015?

Pursue our breakthrough in the cocktail universe with Miss Massenez!
