Wunderlich Wines: Villany wines made with Swiss precisionAlajos Wunderlich, who is of Swiss origin, was tremendously enthused by his first finely accomplished wine, “Kardarka” in 1992. Therefore, in 1997, he decided to establish a small estate in the region of Villany, located at the southern most part of Hungary on the border with Croatia.Due to his genuine talent and the quality of his wines combined with his natural kindness and hospitality, he soon became extremely popular.
Wunderlich wines closely resemble their producer; they are pleasant and convivial.
Historically, the region of Villany has been associated with vines for centuries. The Romans grew vines here, as did the many invaders who followed, Turks, Serbs (Kadarka) and Germans; they all left their mark by the grape varieties they introduced.
Olaszrizling, Hungary’s traditional white variety is of course grown here, but the largest production is currently represented by a wide variety of red varieties: Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, along with Hungarian varieties such as Portugieser, Kékfrankos and Siller.

Buoyed by his well-established reputation, Alajos Wunderlich chose to work closely with his friends the Varjas-Szücs family, passionate wine enthusiasts since 2001. Their collaboration contributed the tremendous energy that was necessary to create a huge wine cellar which resembles a cathedral with its six domes at both extremities and marvellous arched passage ways built with more than 500 000 bricks, intentionally left bare to ensure a constant temperature in this cellar where 1 200 barrels are stored.

With a wide range of varietal wines from 24 hectares of vines planted on diverse soils such as loess, dolomite and limestone, wine-making and maturation carried out in a combination of stainless steel vats and barrels, Alajos Wunderlich offers us wines which all possess the marvellous characteristic qualities of their varieties.

There is also a great deal of interest for blends of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon associated with Merlot and Kékfrankos/Portugieser. They are extremely similar to Rhone Valley wines, since their colour is intense; they are voluptuous, alcoholic and very full on the palate. This is all the direct result of the climate having a strong maritime influence that comes from the Adriatic via Croatia.

These wines are indeed the marvellous consequence of the extremely close bond that exists between all the elements which constitute their characteristics: the climate, the area’s hills and valleys, the soils, the grape varieties and of course, Alajos Wunderlich’s skill.

Creator of all these qualities, Alajos Wunderlich is very much like his wines - frank and filled with heartfelt emotion: simply magnificent.
