Student at the hotel and catering school Saint-Joseph L'Amandier at Saint-Yrieix-sur-Charente, Jordane Breyton won the 23rd edition of the Chapoutier–Métro Cash & Carry France contest of the Best Student Sommelier in Wines and Spirits of France. A very first for this training institution and his teacher Frédéric Devautour.
Jordane Breyton who aimed at least at a place in the finals of the contest organized in the headquarters of the Chapoutier house in Tain l'Hermitage could rightly be more ambitious. Indeed at both the written tests (written tasting comments of two wines and questionnaire) and the finals (marketing, food and wine pairings, English conversation, decanting and service of a wine, degustation and sensory analysis of two wines and identification of two spirits), he proved knowledge, skills, mastery and experience, all acquired thanks to two years in working life. “After a vocational degree, I chose to work and I especially spent one year in New Caledonia. However, as I wished to better know the wine world and even to specialize, I returned to pass the complementary mention.”
One year of extra studies that opened the doors of this contest that has been, for many young sommeliers, a first stage to even more prestigious competitions.
The podium was completed with Marion Le Pen (hotel and catering school of Parc de la Francophonie at La Rochelle) and two female candidates in a tie at the third place, Camille Mercury (hotel and catering school of Tain l'Hermitage) and Vinciane Lefevre (Albert de Mun school in Paris). The other finalists who will also go to discover the Australian vineyard in coming November were Hubert Lecut (hotel and catering school of Dinard) and Alexandre Zahner (Montaleau vocational highschool at Sucy-en-Brie).
During the finals, the candidates had to comment the following wines: a Mont-Louis Cuvée Clos du Breuil 2011 by François Chidaine, a Collioure Cuvée Côté Mer 2013 La Rectorie, Txapa, a Basque aperitif of the Brava domain, Domfrontais Calvados Comte Louis de Lauriston.
