This competitions held on June 2nd 2008 at the Concert and Conference Hall in Strasbourg
Pinot Gris from around the world 2008
216 wines from eight countries were blind tasted by 150 tasters (oenologists, sommeliers, wine shop managers, winegrowers, journalists and wine enthusiasts). After the tasting, 63 medals were awarded by the jury:
• 6 Excellence trophies
• 45 Gold medals
• 12 Silver medals
Gewürztraminers from around the world 2008
Following the competition for Pinot Gris from around the world, the 150 tasters went on to discover 352 wines from eight countries and awarded 103 medals.
These results confirm wine professionals’ impressions
As far as Pinot Gris is concerned, 2006 does not enable us to perceive the typical characteristics of this variety, because it suffered considerably due to bad weather conditions in all countries, including France. The proof of this is that very few medals were awarded for the 2006 vintage.
Gewürztraminer, although less affected by conditions in 2006, did not win unanimous favour from the jury either. Just like Pinot Gris, very few medals were awarded to wines of this vintage.
Earlier vintages, however, captivated tasters. Some magnificent wines in the “Late Harvests”, “Extremely concentrated wines”” and “Top earlier vintage” categories were voted for in majority and quite rightly awarded medals by the jury members. Tasting forms were checked through by an independent sensorial analysis laboratory and verified by a bailiff before the results were published.
‘Strabourg Evénements’ is delighted to already be organising the “Rieslings of the World”, “Pinot Gris of the World” and “Gewürztraminers of the World” 2009. Wines of the 2007 vintage will be presented at these competitions and are already announced as being exceptional worldwide!
