Competition for Europe’s Best Sommelier 2008 Bulgaria (Sofia)
Isa Bal conquers EuropeNow living in Great Britain, he entered the annals of history by becoming the winner of the first event of this competition wholly organised by the ASI (Association of the Sommelier Profession Worldwide).Les dix demi finalistes étaient (de haut en bas et de gauche à droite) : Andreas Jechsmayr, Aristide Spies, Paolo Basso, Samuil Angelov, Eric Zwiebel, Fabio Miccoli, Merete Boe, Manuel Moreira, Soren Polonius, Isa Bal.
A competition which began by stage of selection, held in the reception salons of the Kempinski Zografski Hotel in Sofia, and continued on to a final held in the magnificent setting of the Ivan Vasov Theatre.
Initially, to bring the number of candidates for the title from 30 to 10, the technical committee used classic tests. A tasting of a white wine and a red wine with written comments, then three liqueurs to identify, preceded a test of matching food and wine. The white and red wine used for the previous commented tasting test returned again, served with smoked trout for one, and carpaccio for the other. Each sommelier had to choose a wine that suited both dishes and explain why. Finally 57 question covering Europe and the various aspects of the sommelier metier completed this first stage. The conclusion came with a service test. Seven glasses, half a bottle of champagne and the obligation to serve five people… There were traps … naturally!
For these semi-finalists the series of tests continued: commenting a red wine in five minutes; a test using a computer; decanting and serving a wine for three people; opening and providing comments about a bottle of white wine and then serving ten glasses. After this whirl of tests, only 3 candidates were still in competition: Paolo Basso and Eric Zwiebel (who were in this final threesome in 2006 at the competition held in Paris); the trio was completed by Isa Bal.
As was the case in Rhodes, during the last World competition in 2007, the Australian company Peter Lehman, represented by Hans Astrom, proposed a small test concerning the Shiraz grape variety to all candidates present.
This exercise won a “special distinction” for the Serbian candidate, Djurja Katic and above all first prize for the Turkish candidate, Isa Bal. His success gave him the privilege of a trip to discover the Australian winegrowing region of Barossa.
Already an associate of the UDSF (Union of the French Sommelier Profession), the CIVA (Alsace Wine Trade Council) has this year joined a group of partners of the international association. This measure shows the CIVA’s determination to increasingly assert Alsace’s position on global markets. “Export sales currently concern a quarter of our production” explained Thierry Fritsch, Export Manager at the CIVA, who was present in Sofia, Bulgaria, “and we want to develop awareness about our white wines, both abroad and on our domestic market. Also, we do not overlook the fact that 20% of our wines are sold in restaurants, mainly by sommeliers. This overall situation encouraged us to sign this three year partnership agreement.”
This partnership resulted in establishing a specific test. Fifteen questions, both general and technical, concerning the Alsace winegrowing area, followed by a commented tasting of a wine, in this case a Riesling 2005 Grand Cru Brand, from the de Turckheim cellar. The person who gave the best performance in this test was the Belgian candidate, Aristide Spies. As part of his prize, he will be invited to come to Alsace for a long weekend and discover this region’s winemakers and its finest gastronomic restaurants.
