The last candidates still in competition studying “mentions complémentaires, specialised qualification courses for “Sommelier” and “Barman” professions, at Hotel Schools all over France, came to face the tests comprised in the final of the 6th G.H. Mumm Trophy, organised in partnership with the National Department for Education.
This trophy is awarded to a winner in each of these two categories. After the initial selections, twelve candidates (six future sommeliers and six future barmen) were put in real situations, in public, to show the abilities they had acquired in terms of “expertise and performance” during the apprenticeship of their profession.
As well as annual assessments for pupils, this competition enables teaching staff and professionals to work together to develop professions in this sector. It is a practical method which not only ensures good preparation for these future ambassadors of wines and spirits, but also gives them the advantage of facing the public, their future customers.
The jury members, well-known professionals and teaching staff, were responsible for assessing competitors’ abilities and in fact found it extremely difficult to decide between certain candidates.
In the “Sommelier” category, the G.H. Mumm Trophy 2008 goes to Clément JULIEN, from Nîmes, and in the “Barman” category, the G.H. Mumm Trophpy 2008 goes to Yoann GRAMOULLE, from Dinard.
The competition was followed by a cocktail reception and gala dinner prepared and served by pupils from the Bazeilles Hotel School, assisted by students from the Gustave Eiffel Hotel School in Reims. This gala dinner gave the occasion for G.H Mumm to present some of its wines, including the 1998 and 1982 vintages of the legendary Cuvée “R. Lalou”, a wine named after the man who elevated “G.H.Mumm Champagne” to the rank amongst the very finest champagnes.Anne-Marie Nouaille
